Who do you think you are? Hogan psychometric

Why Hogan?

Hogan Assessments has over 30 years’ experience providing science-based solutions for employee selection and development which offer an objective lens for understanding people.

Over 9 million people have completed Hogan assessments and hundreds of validation studies demonstrate the extent to which the assessments predict performance. The Hogan assessment tools are available in over 40 languages and used by organisations in more than 50 countries from small firms to Fortune 500 global companies in diverse industries.

As the traits measured by the Hogan tools are particularly salient in leadership, Hogan is widely used for leadership development from middle management to executive level.

Who do you think you are?

Hogan assessments measure reputation, not identity. In other words, they assess what other people think of you rather than who you think you are.

Identity is the story we tell ourselves about ourselves — the person we think we are. While there might be some takeaways in how we perceive ourselves, we are usually wrong. We often have an inflated idea of our own talent, or we might be unnecessarily hard on ourselves.

Reputation, on the other hand, is what everyone else thinks of us, and it’s based on our overt behaviors and social skills. Your reputation is the person other people think you are, and your success in the workplace is dependent on your reputation. That’s why this is the part of personality that the best personality tests are based on.

Hogan assessments provide insight into three big questions – What do people want? How will they get what they want? What will get in their way? – by measuring three facets of personality :

  • The bright side of personality
The Hogan Personality Inventory, or HPI, measures the bright side of personality which describes how we relate to others when we are at our best. Assessing this part of personality gives valuable insight into how people work, how they lead, and how successful they will be in the organisation they work within.
  • The dark side of personality
The Hogan Development Survey, or HDS, is the industry-leading measure of the dark side of personality. When leaders are experiencing stress – or feeling complacent – strengths become behaviours that can disrupt relationships, damage reputations and derail their chances of success. By assessing dark-side personality, you can recognise and mitigate performance risks before they become a problem.
  • The inside of personality
The Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory, or MVPI, describes personality from the inside, the goals, values, drivers, and interests that determine what we desire and strive to attain. By assessing values, you can understand what motivates leaders to succeed, and in what type of position, job, and environment they will be the most productive.

Hogan’s Leadership Forecast Series

Hogan’s flagship product, the Leadership Forecast Series, provides an in-depth look at a leader’s performance capabilities, challenges, and core drivers.

Executives will gain strategic self-awareness to leverage their strengths, avoid behaviours that get in the way of success, and gain insight into the culture they create for their teams based on their motivators and values.

The Leadership Forecast Series comprises a set of three comprehensive reports which are based on Hogan’s trademark assessments, the Hogan Personality Inventory, Hogan Development Survey, and Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory, together with a Summary report :

  • The Potential Report
How others see us is rarely how we see ourselves. Based on the HPI, the Potential report focuses on seven dimensions of personality to explain how others would describe a leader’s everyday behaviour and approach to work.
  • The Challenge Report
When a leader is faced with stress or pressure, personality characteristics that might otherwise be strengths emerge as weaknesses. Based on the HDS, the Challenge report is designed to identify behaviours that can interfere with effective leadership.
  • The Values Report
Our core values drive our behaviour, aspirations, and expectations, and they determine leadership style, unconscious biases, and alignment with organisational culture. Drawing from Hogan’s MVPI, the Values report shines light on the type of work environment the leader will create.
  • The Summary Report
Summarising the results from the Potential, Challenge, and Values reports, the Summary report offers an interpretative overview of strengths, challenges, and values and motivators. The report concludes with recommendations for career development.

How to get your own Hogan assessment

I’m Alison Reid and I’m a certified practitioner of HoganAssessments and authorised reseller of Hogan products via APS, an authorised distributor for Hogan. I’ve been using the Hogan Leadership Forecast Series as part of my executive coaching programmes for nearly a decade.

I find it invaluable in helping leaders generate awareness about what drives them, how they show up and what that means for how others experience them – and, of course, what that means for where they would benefit from building their leadership capability. It works well at the beginning of a coaching programme, particularly when paired with 360 feedback.

Taking the Hogan Leadership Forecast Series involves completing three online inventories which take, on average, 15 minutes each to complete. I then have an indepth, 90 minute session with the leader to help them understand the resulting reports and what that means for their leadership.

The assessment can be conducted as a stand-alone exercise, and I would normally recommend it as part of my executive coaching programmes.
